We hold a big party with Shiro no norite(Japanese Tolkien Society) on 23rd August in Osaka. The number of participants was more than 25!
Two of the members had reserved a buffet style restaurant (for Hobbits). The leader of Shiro no Norite and the leader of Cuivienen smial gave a short speech. Tinu who is the member of the German Tolkien Society gave a toast in Elvish and Japanese language!
Laughing, talking, eating and drinking!! Two hours was too short for us.
We had a very pleasant time. Shoko
Cuiviénen participated in the Tolkien Reading Day for the first time this year. There were three main activities that took place over the space of a week or so. Two were internet based and one was a face to face gathering.
On 22nd March a few of our members participated in a reading of "The Hobbit" at "Oku no In" where some members hold regular reading sessions. Since the event was planned at short noticed, there were only a few of us and we took in turn to read. It was interesting to compare the two very different Japanese translations of "The Hobbit" (one was translated by Teiji Seta back in 1965 and the other was translated by Shiroo Yamamoto in 1997).
On 23rd March, 11 of us (based in many different places in Japan and one from Australia) participated in a 3 hour chat discussion on "The Hobbit". The main focus was various hopes and concerns about the upcoming cinematisation of "The Hobbit" including the possible appearance of female Dwarves and the treatment of the 'younger' gollum. Everyone enjoyed the session so much that 3 hours passed like Shadowfax. This method of communication proved to be very suitable given the physical separation of so many members (i.e. scattered throughout Japan). We plan to hold more such discussions.
Lastly, "GANDALF" the group leader conducted a survey on "The Hobbit". 5 questions are asked and the results are now posted on the group's website. The questions included such "Who/What is your favorite character?" and "Which scene you worry about in terms of how it might be depicted in the film?". By far the most popular character was Bilbo. Many people are worried about how the film is going to treat "Riddles in the Dark" scene.
Cuiviénen's Tolkien Reading Day was very successful and as a group we would like to participate in the event again next year.
Four TS members from UK visited us in "Gandalf Coffee" Cafe on 4th September.
We had a wonderful time. We cannot speak English fluently, but we
enjoyed the party!
The TS members wrote an article about the occasion on the Tolkien
Society web page. Gandalf
Cuivienen initiated activities on internet on the eve of the 'Mid-Year's Day' and currently holds approximately 30 members.
Our activities centre on translations of the Tolkien Society website and newsletter. Admittedly many of us are struggling with English language but all of us are pulling together to read through the original writings.
We hope to be able to set up a study group or two where the members who are reluctant English readers can join in to read Tolkien related materials in English along with more experienced readers.
We had a 'birthday party' for Cuiviénen on 14 July 2007 at a pub called Hobgoblin in Shibuya, Tokyo. Time really flew as we all enjoyed talking to each other gathered in many small groups.
Date : July 14th
Time : 15:00 - 17:00
In spite of the heavy rain due to the approaching Typhoon, many of the members gathered for the birthday party of the smial,'cuivienen'.
'Hello!' 'How have you been?' 'Nice to meet you.'
There were manygreetings.
We had a good time taking about scholary themes, Tolkien'swork, the film, on-line games and so on. Small groups were formed for separate topics. We will have the birthday event again next year !
