A Report on Oxonmoot 2009 By Octo kwan from Hong Kong
( I would like to say thank you to Lyn Wilshire & Jan Boom (Fangorn) for their help.)
Seems that 2009 is a special year for me. On 20/ June, I moot with the Japan smial in Osaka 's Gandalf Cafe. On 25--27/Sept, I attended the Oxonmoot. ( this is my 2nd time.) And just 5 days before, on 21/Sept, I got a letter from Beyond Bree, asking me if i could submit art to their 2010 calender. So after some busy days,on 25 I took the airplane to UK. (My sister mailed the art for me.)
After long & tiresome hours of flight & train, when I reached the venue, Lady Margaret's Hall ( Priscilla Tolkien have studied in LMH), by taxi, it's passed 7:00 pm. After check -in, I have some trouble finding my room in Deneke west, for the place was quite dark, cold & can't see the plates with the name of the building. After i put down my luggage, I went to the Eleanor Lodge for registration. ( you can look into www.tolkiensociety.org for the map of the venue.) But there I found a group of people reading excerpt from Tolkien's books.(Telerin Circle?) I waited till the man finished reading& asked them where is the registration? Jan Boom (fangorn) took me to the Talbot Bldg, down stair to the bar & found the registration staff. Many people were there chatting, but I a rest so badly. ( The reading man is Mr. Charles E. Noad. Later he gave me a report he complies, about the details of all the years' Oxonmoot.) ( Originally, I don't have much hope about going to Oxonmoot, but my uncle had a minor stroke& my sister wanted to see him & other friends of my father.)
Next day 26, Sat, is the central day for events. In these 3 days, we were lucky to have fine weather, cool & pretty sunshine. Since I didn't read the OI carefully, at first I couldn't find the Dinning Hall, then I found that it was in fact near to Deneke West. After breakfast, I went to take the things of the Art show. Most of the events are in the Talbot BLdg. ( When I went through the main door, I was surprised to see Chinese calligraphy hanging inside the bldg. Seems that they are a present from University of HK & other HK people, to HK's 17 th governor, Sir Cecil Clementi, just another coincidence!) The Art show room was in Talbot Seminar 2. I met Becky Hitchin, other arts were already in display. I sticked my pictures on the boards & put the Japan fancomics ( dojinshi) & some informations about Japanes dojinshi culture on a table. Then I start to appreciate other arts. Ted Nedsmith's mountains ( the Blue Wizard go East) is beautiful. Later i heard someone said his mountain is American, like Rocky Mountain. There were also Becky's exquitsite traceries, wonder how she manage to draw them by hand? Other artists included Ruth Lacon, Jef Murray...& names that I forgot. THere were pictures of Entwife, Turin slaying Glaurung,, Orthanc , Iluvatar, the Party Tree , Dark Forest, Weathertop & necklaces in Tolkien's stories & many more.
Once again I face the problem of too many good things & too little time. I missed many talks & workshops . ( PLs see the programmes in OI in TS website.) I went only to the Dealers' room , Kay Woolard's art & the Silent auction room. The Dealers' room ( Toynbee JCR) was always full of goodies that it's hard to decide which one to buy. Mark Faith of ' Mark Faith Book Shop' said Hello to me & I told him about my art & he went to see them. Sometimes later , i bought 3 Amon Hen & a CD. Later, when the Dealers' room was near to close, I rushed to there to buy ' the ART of Ruth Lacon' & Ted Nedsmith's cards. ( But I forgot to find the Amon Hen & Mallorn with my arts inside!)
Kay Woolard (Dora Baggins) was passed away last year. Her art was in Talbot Seminar 1. I've saw her art in Tolkien 2005. TS want to make a foundation to presevve her works. Many of her pencil sketches are hanging on the boards. the staff, Dennis Bridoux , shown me many of her colour pictures. Her arts really have the joyous, carefree atmosphere of Hobbitish life. Outside in the corridor, there was an introduction of her life & many of her Amon Hen covers pasted on the wall. I though these can be photo so I took many pictures. Inside there were also the exhibition from the Society's Archives. I remember I saw different countries' " the Hobbit", some merchandise from the film & stamps. Also there was a map about Frodo's journey. Then I went to the Silent Auction room nearby. There were many rare edition of Tolkien calenders on the tables & a bidding card next to them. Many people have already putting their bids. But I though just seeing them is satisfying. ( Also i have to look after my budget....)
I frequently went back to the Art show room to check my arts' stickers & the fancomics. At about 3 o'clock, i met Jan Boom in the corridor. He enjoyed my arts & asked me to go inside the Art Show room & chat with me. He picked some fancomics & I promised to send copies of my art to him , to use in Holland's fanzine. Also, Pat Raynolds (?) left a note asking me if i could give some fancomics to TS archives. I wrote :' Yes, of course.'
The Artshow close at 4:30, but the International Tolkien Forum begins at the same time. in Deneke. So in a rush, I removed my pictures & gave them to Becky, she'll give them to Mr. Andrew Butler to use, I also left some fancomics for TS . When I reached Deneke, it's already passed 5:00 . There were Jan Boom, Unquendor's Harm Schelhas, Chairman of the Slowenian Tolkien Society Gil-galad--David Adrej Francky, Hungarian TS 's Casaba Kiralyhazi , Finland TS, Susan Edwards& many other young people. The Findlanders & the Hungarians brought their magazines & also a Findland calender of the Hobbit. We passed these around for everyone to see. They talked about their societies & smials, what they are planning for 2010 & many other things. I introduced myself, how I met Tolkien & my translation. I said ( with a bit abashed ) that HK still don't have a smial. Jan Boom urged me to make a HK Smial! ( I think it's hard for me for I don't have much spare time . ) The meeting was mean to end at 5:30 but we were still talking at 5: 45. Pity that I have to leave & rush to Dealers' room for a last minute shopping. the Hungarian & Finlanders generously gave me their magazines & calender.
I went back to my room to pack my lauggage, ate some instant noodle , took a shower & do other things. A strange thing happened. From my window, I saw fireworks flashing in the sky. But the programme didn't mention of any firework. Well....maybe Gandalf was there playing with his firework. It lasted a few minutes. But I forgot to ask other attendees if they saw it or not. Could someone solve this mystery?
I was a bit late when I reached the Saturday night party. (Deneke Dining Hall) I think everyone were in the hall. It's quite dark & the limelight fell on the stage. I remember there was a slide show , introducing the events & members of a smial. ( But I forgot the country's name.) The Slowenian TS Gil-galad presented a very funny cartoon about Turin. All the characters , Glaurung & backgrounds are drawn on cut out papers & they move their arms & legs to do the action. When Glaurung hypnosis Turin & Nienor, his eyes rotates like a whirlpool. We all laughed! Jan Boom told me that we can see this cartoon in youtube. The next is the Masquerade. Many people dress up in funny customs playing an Elf civil servant, corseirs, Numenoreans, princess, the High Nazgul & other characters. Jan Boom & the sisters of M played the court of King Hijarmendacil . Other people sang songs & recite potery. Sadly that I didn't stay long & have to go to bed.
27 Sunday was the Enylie. In 2003, I've went alone to see the Professor & his wife's grave but this is my 1st Enylie. Two coaches took us to Wolvercote Cemetery. As usual , the place is quiet & pieceful. We all stood around the grave in rememberance & fellowship. The new chairman , Sally Kennett, made her 1st speech, she read a passage in ' The Council of Elrond', about people from different countries & races coming together for a common goal. Then the representatives of TS laid the wreaths. Dennis Bridoux sang an Elvish song , i was surprised that he sang so beautifully! Then there was a few minutes of silence & rememberance. Some people have already left some offerings on the grave. There was an eagle, a booklet in plastic bag & other things. I found in my pocket a coin of HK. Tolkien 've never been to HK, so I brought a little piece of HK to him & put the coin on his grave. Lyn Wilshire talked to me & I said that I know the Taiwan & Japan smialers, I hope more Chinese fans may come to Oxonmoot. She introduced Gaspar Reiff to me. Gaspar hosted a talk ' the Hobbit as a Musical ' . He & the performance of the Tolkien Ensemble can be seen in youtube. When i back home, Lyn sent one of the film to me.
We took the coaches back to LMH . People started to take their lauggages & leave. LMH have fair natural scenery & it's building is full of antiquity . Pity that I cannot stay longer to look around. A card for Priscilla Tolkien was passing around us & I signed my name on it. I have to go to London to meet my sister. So I said goodbye to them & left with some other attendees. Hope in the future I can come again.
In Oxonmoot, people have told me news of other events in the future: Mark Faith introduced www.Festivalintheshire.com , on 13--15/Aug /2010 , Wale, UK.
A staff in Dealers' room told me about the 7 th Middle-earth Art Exhibition ,26--29/Mar/2010, Glos, www.adcbooks.co.uk
Also there is 'the Return of the Ring' , 16--20/ Aug/ 2012, UK , www.returnofthering.org
Hope these will be useful. Pity that this is not a very complete report for I missed many programmes.
